I’ve worked since 2001 as a professional writer, managing editor, copy editor, and proofreader. My work in all these capacities includes critical, news, feature, technical, educational, promotional, and business writing.

After working for four years as a technical writer, I spent twelve years managing publications (including journals, a quarterly newsletter, conference programs, and other online and print collateral) for an academic association before venturing into business for myself in 2017.

I’m also freelance journalist who specializes in jazz and other music. I’m a regular contributor to JazzTimes (writing a biweekly column, “JazzTimes 10,” for jazztimes.com), The Washington Post, Washington City Paper, and Down Beat. My byline has also appeared in Jazziz, Bandcamp Daily, NPR Music, and Slate, among others. I served from 2013-15 as a board member of the Jazz Journalists Association.

I deliver professional writing and editing work in a variety of contexts. Click on the links above for more about my work and email me to discuss specific opportunities.

TESTIMONIAL

"Mike enthusiastically jumped into a writing project about a topic that was new to him. He applied a journalist's curiosity to the subject, finding compelling stories in otherwise dry material. His writing is clean and stylish, and he's a pleasure to work with."
